Definition of Polymyositis
Polymyositis (pol-e-mi-o-si-tis) is a persistent inflammatory muscle disease that causes weakness of skeletal muscles, which control movement. Polymyositis is classified as a chronic inflammatory myopathy➀, one of only 3 such diseases.
Polymyositis can occur at any age, but it mostly affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60, and females are more likely to get it than males. The signs and symptoms of Polymyositis usually develop gradually over weeks or months.
Symptoms of Polymyositis:
The signs and symptoms of Polymyositis develop and appear gradually which makes it difficult to pinpoint when they first started, they may also fluctuate from week to week or month to month. The signs and symptoms of Polymyositis can include the following:
Progressive Muscle Weakness:
Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia):
Difficulty Speaking:
Mild Joint or Muscle Tenderness:
Fatigue:Shortness of Breath:
Polymyositis typically affects the muscle,s closest to the trunk, particularly those in the Hips, Thighs, Shoulders, Upper Arms and Neck. The weakness is symmetrical, which means that it involves muscles on the left and right sides of the body.
The Disease worsens over time, as muscle weakness progresses, you may find difficulty in climbing stairs, rising from a sitting position, lifting object or reaching overhead.
The Cause of Polymyositis:
The exact cause of Polymyositis is unknown, but but the disease shares many characteristics with autoimmune disorders, in which your immune system attacks normal body components. Normally your immune system works to protect your healthy body cells against attack from foreign substances, if you have Polymyositis, an unknown cause may act as a trigger for your immune system to start producing autoimmune antibodies, that attack your body's own tissue. Many people with Polymyositis show a detectable level of autoantibodies in their blood.
➀ Myopathy: In medicine Myopathy is a muscular disease, in which the muscle fibers do not function for many reasons.
Myopathy simply means (Muscle Disease) from the Greek Myo = Muscle and Pathos (pathy) = suffering ie Suffering Muscle,s. This meaning that the primary defect is within the muscle as opposed to the nerves or elsewhere.
